About the Academy

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films was founded in 1972 by Dr. Donald A. Reed to honor, recognize and promote genre entertainment. We screen films, host conversations with filmmakers, and present the Saturn Awards every year.

Recent honorees include Jeffrey Katzenberg, Leonard Nimoy, Robert Halmi Jr. and Sr., Guillermo del Toro, Lance Henriksen, Zack Snyder and Frank Darabont. Past honorees include Steven Spielberg, Sherry Lansing, Tom Rothman, James Cameron, Ray Bradbury, Brian Grazer, Peter Jackson, Rod Serling, Fritz Lang, Roger Corman and Bryan Singer.

Screenings for members

The non-profit Academy began screening films around 1975. Over the years we've shared screenings with the Artists and Writers Workshop, Shanta and Milan Herzog's Children's Fantasy Film Festival, and the Los Angeles Film Teachers Association. Today we screen at theatres around Los Angeles and invite members to plays, concerts and special events during the week.

Our members are industry professionals, film lovers and academics. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in film and live events, and former members of LAFTA, which closed after 38 years, are especially welcome.
